d c Opinion Leads

Do you enjoy reading long opinion leads? Here they are.... Going to be about US national debt.

Startling statement-
Here is a fact, the US national debt is now at 14.1 trillion dollars and increases as 75 million dollars a hour. What this means is that every citizen of the United States of America has to pay 45,000 dollar just to get rid of the national debt. However, a trillion dollars is a pretty abstract concept, after all its just a number. But consider this, if you spent 1 dollar per second, it would take you a whopping 31,000 years to spend one trillion dollars. In total, that comes out to be 437,100 years to pay off the US national debt. Now that’s a big number.

Narrative-
On a rainy day, Jimmy was hit by a car while walking across the street. He was hit by a drunk driver, who drove away carelessly after committing the act. He suffered agonizing pain for over an hour while the already strained medical system struggled to keep up with the increase in crime across the nation, a direct result of the massive budget cuts to police departments across the US. The medical system did not fare much better, Medicare and Medicaid have been discontinued in light of the ballooning national deficit. Cuts to all government departments have occurred just to squeeze money to pay off debt interest. This is a grim future, one that may very become true with the ever increasing national debt.

Compare and Contrast-
When our nation was just an infant 220 years ago, in 1791 the US national debt was just 75 million dollars; today the US national debt increases by that number every hour.

Rhetorical Question-
Do you enjoy the benefits of medicare? What about social security? How about having a good free public education system? Well, if the US national debt continues to spiral out of control due to poor fiscal management and political motives then you may very well not receive the same benefits that your parents got to enjoy.

Twist-
The US national debt of 14.1 trillion dollars is just a number and has no real actual meaning says leading economist Zachary Karabell. Thomas A. Faulhaber, executive director of the Harrison company and editor of The Business Forum Online, disagrees, stating how the US national debt has a direct and tangible impact on the US economy.

Ishaan's Opinion Leads

Here are three leads for an opinion piece convincing parents to let their kids play contact sports.

-Ishaan

TWIST

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. Your child is running with the football. They’re inches away from gaining a first down. Suddenly, a hulking, gigantic figure wearing the opposing team’s uniform gets in his way. Before you can say anything, your child is being dragged off the field and into the locker room. He has a concussion.

Just kidding! In actuality, concussions are more and more a thing of the past. New, advanced technology in helmets and concussion monitoring have caused a huge drop in the number of concussions, and help ensure that those who suffer concussions are treated and returned to play as soon as possible.

DIRECT APPEAL

As a parent, you want the best for a child. Unless you’re a sociopath or, like the Church of the Sun in Montreal, you believe your child is the Antichrist, your goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of your child above all else. And when it comes to contact sports such as football and ice hockey, the best thing you can do for your child is to let them join in.

RHETORICAL

How can you take a child who has an absent parent, a dysfunctional school with under-performing teachers, and a weight problem and turn them into a successful college student with straight A’s? Just ask Antoine Rojas, a freshman and defensive back at Michigan State University who grew up in the notorious Southgate neighborhood of Detroit. If his parents hadn’t allowed him to play football as a young child, he might not even have graduated.

YOU gotta read it by -Q

Descriptive
NASA’s plan to head to the stars is under fire again, this time by federal deficit hit men. The sapce agency has been suffering cuts to several programs for the past years now but nothing compares to the scale of the most recent setback. The Constellation was a human spaceflight program aimed to gain significant experience in operating away from Earth's environment, develop technologies needed for opening the space frontier, and conduct fundamental science. In short, it  was to get humans on other  worlds. This among other cuts have opened a door for private companies to develop space flight and NASA should give them their full support now that they can No longer accomplish the goals themselves.

Compare and Contrast
50 years ago the United States had more exports than imports, those were the days when the governemnt had money to spend, nowadays the country is importing so much more than it imports that it has a deficit of 14.1 trillion dollars. There is no money and the government is needing to borrow money more and more and to lower this huge debt many things must be cut. Its been over 37 years since the last man has set foot on the moon and NASA was aiming to do it again. Their current project Constellation was canceled and that opens the door for private companies to join in for the race to space.

Rhetorical Question
Have you ever wanted to go up to space? How about setting foot on another planet? Have you? well now its gonna take a whole lot longer than it would've if NASA would've just given money to private companies.
